Infinite Fragments is a cycle of works I’m currently developing as a part of my PhD research mainly focused on printing on plant fibers. In the time of pandemic my way of working with printmaking took a strong turn towards an even more manual based process, the art of papermaking. I stopped the process of transitioning from plant to sheet of paper halfway, thus obtaining material for further work, a fiber – not yet paper, but of archival quality. Fragments are the places where contradictory features meet: subjective and objective, lost and surviving, real and ideal, past and future. Fragments always remind us about the presence of the absent. Both of them are the primary components of printmaking and papermaking.

Äärettömät fragmentit on sarja teoksia, joita työstän parhaillaan osana kasvikuitujen käyttöä grafiikassa käsittelevää väitöskirjatutkimustani. Pandemian aikana työskentelyni muuttui entistäkin manuaalisemmaksi ja aloitin myös paperin valmistuksen käsin. Pysäytin valmistusprosessin, jossa kasvi muokkautuu paperiarkiksi, ja sain näin jatkotyöskentelyä varten materiaaliksi kuitua, joka ei ollut vielä paperia, mutta oli arkistolaatuista. Fragmenteissa vastakkaiset asiat kohtaavat: omakohtainen ja yleispätevä, tuhoutuva ja selviytyvä, todellisuus ja ihanne, menneisyys ja tulevaisuus. Fragmentit muistuttavat meitä poissaolevan läsnäolosta, asioita, jotka molemmat ovat läsnä grafiikan ja paperin tekemisessä.
