It must be over 20 years ago when I discovered a photo journal about Asian countries in a London antique book shop. A report on a psychiatric clinic in Peking from a photographer named Lu Nan stroke me very much. On a first look the pictures seemed horrifying, and it felt almost impossible that people could be treated this way in the twentieth century. Especially the photo of a woman named CHANG SHUWA touched me a lot. A boundless hopelessness and loneliness together with an agony speaks from the picture. I decided to make the intaglios as stipple etchings. By using purely dots to show the images, it seemed to me the obvious technique to present the intensity of the situation.

 Siitä täytyy olla yli 20 vuotta, kun löysin lontoolaisesta antikvariaatista Aasian maita käsittelevän kuvareportaasin. Lu Nan -nimisen valokuvaajan tekemä reportaasi psykiatrisesta klinikasta Pekingissä järkytti minua. Ensinäkemältä kuvat näyttivät kammottavilta ja tuntui lähes mahdottomalta, että ihmisiä kohdeltiin näin vielä 1900-luvulla. Erityisesti kuva naisesta nimeltä Chang Shuwa kosketti minua suuresti. Kuvasta välittyy ääretön toivottomuus ja yksinäisyys sekä kärsimys. Päätin tehdä teoksen pistekaiverruksena, mikä tuntui oikealta tekniikalta tuoda esiin tilanteen intensiivisyys.
