Hair and headwear play an important part in our human identity, especially for women: both how we see ourselves in the world, and how we are perceived by society. In 2015 I was diagnosed with cancer, losing my hair, and the potent significance of headwear and hair loss had powerful meaning to me personally, as it did to women worldwide. This event brought an abrupt closure to my professional career, which had reached a level of public recognition. As a result it is only now in 2021 that I have fully regained my creative energy again. For me the turban has become an emblem of strength, of resilience and determination of looking forward.

Hiukset ja päähineet ovat erityisesti meille naisille suuri osa identiteettiä: sitä kuinka näemme itsemme osana maailmaa, ja sitä kuinka yhteiskunta näkee meidät. Vuonna 2015 minulla diagnosoitiin syöpä ja menetin hiukseni. Päähineiden käyttämisellä ja hiustenlähdöllä oli minulle henkilökohtaisesti suuri merkitys, kuten sillä on naisille ympäri maailman. Diagnoosi lopetti äkillisesti ammatillisen urani, juuri kun olin tullut taiteilijana tunnetuksi. Vasta nyt vuonna 2021 olen saanut luomisenergiani takaisin kokonaan. Turbaanista on tullut minulle vahvuuden, sinnikkyyden ja päättäväisyyden tunnus.
