The work represents the unfolding of a family story that was hidden for 70 years. My mother was a Hungarian Auschwitz survivor. Upon returning from the concentration camp, she was informed that her parents committed suicide since they could not avoid her daughter from being deported. I grew up with the story of my grandparents’ suicide and my mother’s sadness. In 2013 I got a message from a journalist saying that he had found a confession by his grandmother Countess Margit Esterhazy. It was an event in 1944 when she was 20 years old and witnessed a scene from her window. My grandparents’ house was close to Count Esterhazy’s castle and my grandfather, and the Esterhazys knew each other. During the war, the castle was occupied by Nazi soldiers. When the Nazis came, my grandfather begged the Count to help them hide but the Count refused and ordered the Nazis to shoot them from behind. The murder was declared as a suicide in the official story. 

Teos kuvaa 70 vuotta piilossa olleen perhetarinan paljastumista. Äitini oli unkarilainen Auschwitzin selviytyjä. Keskitysleiriltä vapauduttuaan hän kuuli vanhempien tehneen itsemurhan, koska nämä eivät olleet voineet estää tyttärensä pakkosiirtoa. Kasvoin kuunnellen tarinaa isovanhempieni itsemurhasta, jota äitini suri koko elämänsä ajan. Vuonna 2013 sain viestin toimittajalta, jonka isoäiti, kreivitär Margit Esterhazy, oli kuollut. Isovanhempieni talo sijaitsi lähellä kreivi Esterhazyn linnaa, ja isoisäni ja Esterhazyt tunsivat toisensa. Toimittaja oli löytänyt isoäitinsä jäämistöstä tunnustuksen vuodelta 1944, jolloin natsisotilaat miehittivät linnan. Tuolloin 20-vuotias kreivitär oli nähnyt ikkunasta, kuinka isoisäni oli natsien saapuessa anellut kreiviä auttamaan isovanhempiani piiloutumaan. Tämä oli kieltäytynyt ja määrännyt natsit ampumaan isovanhemmat takaapäin. Virallisesti murha julistettiin itsemurhaksi.
